ADILABAD: Health Minister and Adilabad district in charge Danam Nagender on Friday launched the food security programme for tribals of Adilabad at Pataguda village of Indervelli mandal. Each of the 65 Kolam families of this village were handed over food baskets containing nutritious foodgrains and other material all worth Rs. 1,200.

The Minister later chaired the governing body meeting of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency at the PMRC building at Utnoor.

Seating arrangement

He assured a complaining Ramesh Rathod, Adilabad MP belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), that seating arrangement for MLAs in the district would now on be made as per their seniority.

Mr. Rathod raised objection over the seating arrangement that did not conform to the seniority status of some MLAs. Collector Ahmad Nadeem quoted the protocol rules while denying that disrespect was shown towards any Legislator.

Large-scale corruption

The meeting also saw the participants, including the MP, raising questions over the action taken against those officials who were responsible for scams in housing and other programmes.

It was pointed out that no action had been taken against officials so far despite large scale corruption in drawing of housing bills coming to light.

Mr. Nagender said an inquiry by ITDA Project Officer Samual Anand Kumar would be followed by suitable penal action against the guilty.

Bellampally MLA and Floor Leader of the Communits Party of India (CPI) Gunda Mallesh, Boath and Khanapur MLAs -- G. Nagesh and Suman Rathod -- and Council Member K. Premsagar Rao were among those who attended the meeting.

NREGS works: Adilabad Collector accused of bias

ADILABAD: Adilabad MP Ramesh Rathod on Tuesday accused Collector Ahmad Nadeem of being partisan in sanction of works under the AP Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (REGS). The accusation came at the Zilla Parishad general body meeting where he was speaking on the move to get sanction for works to be taken up with an outlay of Rs. 28 crore allocated recently under the REGS.

Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna alleged that the administration had flouted rules while sanctioning works. He said the administration had accorded sanction to works even while the criterion regarding population was ignored.

The Collector said it was for the general body of the ZP to stick to rules while enlisting the works. The administration sanctioned those works that had the prior approval of the ZP.

Boath MLA G. Nagesh threatened to move a privilege motion in the Legislative Assembly as the officials of Irrigation department had sidelined him during foundation laying ceremonies in his constituency recently.

Water crisis looming large in Adilabad

ADILABAD: The yellowing of leaves in the hilly forests of Adilabad district, especially those in the mandals of Asifabad, Kerameri, Jainoor and Narnoor, is a portentous pointer towards the drinking water situation.

This year’s deficit rainfall by about 50 per cent has created considerable moisture stress in the uplands here which has resulted in Autumn setting in rather early.

The teak trees have already begun to shed the leaves in the hills.

The unusually low ground water level at this time of the year is a matter of grave concern for the authorities. .

Seized of the matter, the Government has initiated work on development of watersheds in stress mandal of Kerameri, Jainoor, Narnoor, Utnoor and Bazarhatnoor and is planning to transport drinking water to some identified dry areas.

The watersheds will however be useful only in the coming years and not in the summer months.

However, these watersheds will not be of use in the next summer.

G. Kumaraswamy, the Deputy Director of Ground Water says, “Pegged at 8.15 mtrs at present, the average ground water level in the district shows a drop of 2.15 mtrs as compared to last year’s 6.16 mtrs. Such a sharp decrease in the level is certainly portentous”.

“If the ground water level plunges below the mark of 10 to 11 mtrs it is considered to be a crisis situation,” he adds.

In the hilly stress mandals and some others places like Asifabad where the level of ground water is already below the 23 mtr mark, special attention needs to be taken. “The drinking water problem in the eastern side of the district may be comparatively less severe than the western parts because water is usually found here at deeper levels. The western part of the district is the shallow zone where water is not available beyond 30 mtrs. It is in these areas that artificial recharge of ground water is badly needed. This can be done through construction of water shed structures. In the stress mandals that have habitations located on higher altitudes however, drinking water needs to be transported", opines Mr. Kumaraswamy.

Adilabad forests take on vibrant autumn notes

Leave alone its beauty in spring season, Adilabad district becomes visually even more delightful at this time of the year as the forests welcome autumn.

The lovely jungles of Asifabad and Kerameri present a picture that conforms to the observation of famous French playwright and novelist Albert Camus, ‘Autumn is the second spring when every leaf is a flower.’

Nature lovers vouch that any change in the season is more pronounced in the forests and the colours therein enthuse people.

Each of this change, marked by its own characteristics is invariably a thing of beauty, they add.

Just before the trees begin to shed leaves, the greenery takes on golden brown and yellow hues. The clear skies of the time corresponding with the ‘Sharad ritu’ enhance the beauty of the place.

Medicinal plants

“This is also a time when most of the vegetables are available. Medicinal plants besides fruits like the guava, the custard apple and many others that grow in the forests are available now,” Guruji Ravinder Sharma of Adilabad’s Kala Ashram points out towards another aspect of autumn in the countryside. As this period comes after the end of the rainy season, the monsoon slush in rural areas vanishes completely. The backyards and the open places near households in villages are littered with vegetable and fruit vines and creepers. “Autumn was also known for launching warfare since the ancient times. In ‘Amuktamalyada’, Srikrishnadevaraya mentions the dew that condenses on the grass. People can wash their feet in this dew. In ‘Raghuvamsham’, Kalidasa mentions emperor Dileep launching ‘jaitra yatra’ expedition at the start of autumn,” recounts C.V. Ram Reddy, teacher at the Kolam Ashrama School, Adilabad, presenting another feature associated with the season.

The government has discontinued teaching in schools about the relevant facts about nature. “The pedda bala shiksha, a primer that listed names of important plants and trees and names and features of different seasons should be reintroduced in schools so that students gain basic knowledge about nature,” opines Guruji.

2 new trains introduced

ADILABAD: Two new weekly trains, connecting Nanded in Maharashtra and Sriganganagar in Rajasthan and Kolhapur and Nagpur in Maharashtra will run via Adilabad town in near future, according to the new time table. The introduction of these trains depends on how fast the ballast collection work between Pimpalkuti and Majri stations on the Adilabad-Nagpur route gets completed. The old iron sleepers have been replaced with cement concrete ones to strengthen the track.

The 2485 Nanded-Sriganganagar superfast will connect Adilabad directly with the country’s capital for the first time. In the reverse direction train 2486 will depart Sriganganagar on Fridays and reach Adilabad at 00.15 a.m. on Sunday and Nanded at 3.30 a.m.
