Bifurcation of Medak, Adilabad ruled out

HYDERABAD: The Government has ruled out bifurcation of Medak and Adilabad districts with separate identity for Siddipet and Mancherial areas. It has taken a policy decision not to entertain demands for new districts as they lead to similar requests from several parts of the State.

Revenue Minister D. Prasada Rao informed the Assembly during Question Hour on Thursday that the Government took the decision conscious of the fact that the demand could also come from areas as Itchapuram in his own native Srikakulam district which was too small to be considered for a district. The Government did not want to incur extra expenditure on administration by increasing number of districts.

Responding to a question by TRS legisalator T. Harish Rao that long distances between Medak and Adilabad district headquarters and Siddipet and Mancherial respectively should be taken into consideration, the Minister said, distance alone could not be a criteria for creation of new districts. Earlier, the TRS legislator said, Siddipet was 150 km from Sangareddy, headquarters of Medak and Mancherial 200 km from Adilabad town. It was easier for people of Siddipet to travel to Hyderabad than go to Sangareddy.

The residents of Siddipet and Mancherial had to visit district headquarters for every thing involving district-level fora. Moreover, the demand for new districts was only from the backward areas. They simplified administration, he added. He recalled that the Chief Minister had promised a separate district for Mancherialwhen he was Leader of Opposition. He reiterated the assurance after assuming power.
